Lenten Reflections
WEDNESDAY OF THE FIFTH WEEK OF LENT, MARCH 29, 2023
By Fr. Bede Camera, O.S.B.
Shadrach. Meshach. Abednego.
I always enjoyed saying Mass for school children when this reading occurred. I’d shout out the three names, and the children enjoyed shouting them after me. They probably forgot everything else I told them, but I’ll bet they will always remember these three names.
Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego walked among the flames in the fiery furnace, but the flames did not harm them. This reminds me of what the Prophet Isaiah had to say in chapter 43: “Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name; you are mine. When you pass through waters, I will be with you. When you walk through fire, you shall not be burned, nor will flames consume you. . . . you are precious in my eyes and I love you.” We need to keep these words close to our hearts, especially during the difficult times and struggles that are part of every life.
In these days, we are all walking through flames. Our planet is burning up, while corporate and political greed are blocking and preventing necessary efforts to do what is needed. Meanwhile, extremism of all kinds is stoking the fires of hatred, violence and division in our land and the furnace is getting seven times hotter. Meanwhile we often fear our personal struggles with weakness and temptation will overwhelm us. But wait: a fourth person is seen walking in the flames with the three holy men. An angel of God is with them to protect them. God’s angel walks with you and me as well; in the midst of all turmoil, we are protected. And why? Because we are precious in God’s eyes and He loves us. As I said, keep those words close to your heart. May God bless you today with the help you need.
