Advent Reflections

By Br. Amadeus Cundiff, O.S.B., Philosophy
On this day, the Church’s liturgy guides us to meditate on two teachings: man’s longing for the just city and the martyrdom of Saint Lucy. Through her reading from the prophet Zephaniah, the Church reminds us that the people of Israel longed for their redemption both as individuals and as a people. We will learn that Christ’s coming means the proclamation of the Kingdom of God.
Through the memorial of Saint Lucy, the Church reminds us that the Kingdom of God is neither of this world nor of human accomplishment. The holy city, the city of righteousness, is the work of God. It is to Christ that we look with expectation; it is from Christ that we must expect the building of the new Jerusalem, not the modern secular state, nor the medieval principate, nor the classical republic. May Christ be for us all in all.
