In today’s Gospel, we are introduced to Elizabeth and Zechariah. They are older in age and seemingly unable to have a child, but God blesses them with one anyway. We come to know that this child is John the Baptist, who plays an important role in laying the foundation for Jesus’ life and ministry.
Today’s readings remind me that Advent is a season of joyful hope and anticipation. Elizabeth and Zechariah’s desire for a child, which seemed so hopeless, was made possible through the Lord. I am amazed that God does the same for me, and for all of us. He hears our innermost prayers and responds to them – not always in the way we expect, or on our timetable, but according to His plan. And as Elizabeth shows us, His plan is always better than anything we can imagine.
The responsorial psalm also reminds us of who exactly we are waiting for in joyful anticipation. The Lord is our “rock of refuge,” “stronghold,” and “fortress.” May we remember this during the last stretch before Christmas day, and may we be filled with joy and hope because the Lord is all of these things, and so much more.
